What precautions should be taken after getting Botox?

One of the most frequently asked questions by patients after Botox treatment is actually quite simple: "What should I do now?"

There is no special or strenuous aftercare process. However, paying attention to a few points, especially in the first few hours, will help prevent unnecessary irritation of the treated area and reduce the likelihood of bruising or swelling.

It is usually possible to resume daily life after Botox treatment. However, the recommendations your doctor gives may vary depending on the area where the treatment is applied. Therefore, the following information is for general informational purposes only.

The first few hours are crucial.

After the procedure, you may feel the need to touch your face or check the treated area. However, frequently touching, pressing, or rubbing the area is not advisable.

Especially in the first hours:

  • The injection site should not be massaged or rubbed.

  • Procedures that apply intense pressure to the face should be avoided.

  • It is preferable to remain in an upright position as much as possible for the first few hours and not to lie down immediately.

  • If facial cleansing is necessary, it should be done with gentle movements, without pressing hard on the skin.

  • The aim here is not to completely restrict daily activities. The common belief that you should not move your face, speak, or make any facial expressions after getting Botox has no scientific basis.

  • The most important thing to remember is to avoid unnecessarily rubbing or applying pressure to the injection site.

What to watch out for after getting Botox?

What precautions should be taken on the day of a Botox injection?

For most people, returning to daily life after a Botox treatment is quite easy. However, it is necessary to be a little more careful on the day of the procedure, especially in the first few hours.

The goal here isn't to restrict yourself throughout the day. Basically, it's sufficient to avoid unnecessary rubbing of the injection site, refrain from strenuous physical activity, and avoid applying pressure to the area after the procedure.

Avoid touching your face too much in the first few hours.

After a Botox injection, one's hand inevitably goes to the treated area. You might want to check in the mirror, feel the area, or gently massage it. It's best not to do this.

Do not rub, press, or massage the injection sites during the first few hours. If you need to wash your face, do so gently; the important thing is not to press hard on the skin.

Don't lie down immediately.

It is recommended to remain in an upright position for the first few hours after a Botox injection. Therefore, instead of sleeping or lying down for a long time immediately after the procedure, it is better to continue with your daily activities.

This doesn't mean you can't bend your head at all. You don't need to worry about bending over briefly or moving normally during the day. The recommendation here is to avoid lying face down or in a position that puts pressure on the head for extended periods, especially in the first few hours.

Don't do strenuous exercise that day.

It's a good idea to postpone strenuous exercise until after your Botox treatment. For running, weight training, or other high-intensity sports, it's preferable to wait at least 24 hours.

Normal daily movements and light activities usually do not cause problems.

Thinking, "I did some exercise and the Botox went away," is also incorrect. The main reason for this advice regarding exercise is to try to prevent an increase in redness, swelling, or bruising that may occur in the injection areas after the procedure.

Avoid saunas, Turkish baths, and very hot environments.

On the day you get Botox, it's best to avoid saunas, Turkish baths, and environments where you'll be exposed to intense heat.

It's also important not to overdo it with very hot showers. Lukewarm or normal-temperature showers are generally a part of daily life; however, showering for a long time with very hot water can increase redness or tenderness, especially in injection areas.

Be gentle when applying makeup.

When it comes to makeup after Botox, the most important thing to pay attention to is not the makeup itself, but the way it's applied.

If you need to apply makeup, do not press or rub the products into your face. Be especially gentle in the areas where the needles were inserted.

If there is significant bleeding, irritation, or tenderness at the procedure site, it would be best to follow your doctor's advice regarding makeup.

It's better not to consume alcohol that day.

It is recommended that you avoid consuming alcohol on the day you get Botox. Alcohol can increase the tendency to bruise in some people, so it's best to avoid it after the procedure.

Therefore, it may be important to avoid alcohol on the day of the procedure, especially for people who bruise easily.

Can coffee be drunk?

There is no evidence to suggest that drinking coffee after Botox treatment diminishes its effectiveness. Therefore, it cannot be said that you should completely stop drinking coffee simply because you've had Botox.

However, it is advisable to be cautious when consuming very hot beverages, especially if there is tenderness or swelling in the injection area.

Leave the facial massage and skincare for another day.

Do not schedule facial massages, intensive facial treatments, or any other procedures that involve pressure on the face on the day of your treatment.

It is preferable to leave the treated area as relaxed as possible in the first few hours after Botox injections. When skincare can be resumed depends on the type of treatment and the area where Botox was injected.

Don't evaluate the results of the Botox that day.

It's normal not to see the change you expected when you look in the mirror a few hours after the procedure.

The effects of Botox are not immediate. The appearance seen on the first day should not be considered the final result of the procedure. It takes time for the effect to appear and become noticeable.

Therefore, one should not rush to decide whether an additional procedure is needed or to evaluate the result within the first day.

Can I resume my normal life on the day I get Botox?

In most cases, yes. You don't need to restrict yourself from leaving work and going home, walking, doing your daily tasks, or talking normally. The key for the first day is to avoid rubbing the treated area, to stay away from strenuous exercise and excessive heat, and to avoid applying unnecessary pressure to the area.

Most importantly, you must follow the specific instructions given to you after the procedure. This is because the treated area, the purpose of botulinum toxin use, the application technique, and the individual's characteristics can all lead to differences in aftercare recommendations.

If you experience noticeable and progressively worsening swelling, a widespread rash, difficulty breathing or swallowing, a significant change in vision, or any other unusual symptoms after a Botox injection, you should contact the healthcare professional who performed the procedure immediately.

Can I swim in the sea after getting Botox?

Instead of going into the sea the day you get Botox, it's better to wait a while. The issue here isn't that seawater damages the Botox; it's about avoiding unnecessary irritation to the injected area immediately after the procedure. Botox is applied to specific points in the skin and muscle tissue with a thin needle, and after the procedure, slight redness, tenderness, swelling, or small bruises may occur at the injection sites.

Swimming in the sea alone does not negate the effects of Botox. However, swimming immediately after the procedure exposes you to other factors such as sun exposure, hot weather, sweating, and contact with the face. In particular, pressure from goggles, swimming caps, or other equipment while swimming, and then drying your face roughly with a towel, can unnecessarily rub the treated area. Therefore, it is better to postpone your plans to swim on the day of your Botox treatment, or if that's not possible, to follow the time frame recommended by your doctor after the procedure. Particular care should be taken if the treatment is applied to mobile and sensitive areas of the face, such as the forehead, between the eyebrows, or around the eyes.
